2021 JoVE Researcher Innovation Award Winner: Dr. Charles Clark

Postdoctoral Researcher, Leiden University, Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR)

Dr. Charles Clark received his B.S. in chemistry from the College of William and Mary in 2014, and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Virginia in 2019 from the group of Professor James Landers. His doctoral thesis “Microfluidic applications in forensic science” described his work using microfluidic platforms to address the backlog of untested DNA samples from sexual assault investigations. This work included field-testing prototype instruments in forensic labs around the United States and was funded by the National Institute of Justice.

Charles is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Leiden University (Netherlands) in the group of Professor Thomas Hankemeier. His research projects include developing a microfluidic approach to high-throughput mass spectrometry, as well as designing a novel workflow for single-cell metabolomics.

Winning this award is very motivating, and encourages me to keep exploring new ways to educate and instruct within my research field.”
