Research Article
Aimed at communicating novel research. Centered on a narrative about interesting new results. Methods are described in detail to explain how the results were obtained and enable accurate replication. Novel results required.
Method Article
Centered around how smething is done - an experimental approach, computational workflow, clinical procedure, etc. Methods are described in a high level of procedural detail, and representative results are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology. Novel results are allowed but not required.
Case Report
Aimed at reporting the condition and course of treatment for a single patient. Only relevant in clinical settings. Documents rare or instructive patient histories, and/or reports new and cutting-edge treatment modalities.
Review Article
Aimed at summarizing the state of a field of research or clinical practice. Synthesizes the primary research literature to create a cohesive understanding of recent developments and future directions. Calls attention to important primary articles in the field.
