Dr. Shefaly Shorey

Dr. Shorey is an Assistant Professor at Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, National University of Singapore (NUS). Her research program focuses on enhancing family dynamics by supporting children and women’s health. Through her research, she aims to improve the health and well-being of families, especially new parents. She strongly believes that healthy families will be able to contribute better to their communities which in turn will help build healthy societies and strong nations. She has designed technology-based psychosocial educational interventions for a varied group of populations including new parents, women with gynecological disorders, grandparents and children with chronic conditions. She has conducted both quantitative and qualitative studies. She specializes in conducting Randomized Controlled Trials and Qualitative Systematic Reviews. Her research studies involve national and international collaborations. Dr. Shorey’s research focuses on enhancing health outcomes, quality of care and nursing education. She is one of the few nurse academics that have incorporated Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality in nursing education.

Dr. Shorey has received various awards for her academic and research excellence. Recently she was awarded the ‘President Nurse Award’, the highest accolade for the nursing profession in Singapore.  She has been invited to various conferences and the findings of her research have been presented at national, regional, and international conferences. She has published more than 130 papers in high-impact factor peer-reviewed journals. She is the only nurse academic in Singapore whose publications are published in journals with an Impact Factor of more than 10. Dr.Shorey’s research has been regularly published in National Newspapers and broadcasted via several Television and Radio Channels. For her past work for Singaporean parents, Dr. Shorey is recognized as the parenting expert by the Ministry of Social and Family Health (MSF), Singapore to contribute her educational content to their Families for Life Portal. Dr.Shorey also serves as an advisor for the MSF to support Singaporean parents for their parenting needs in Singapore. For her volunteer work, she has been awarded the ‘Friends of MSF award in 2021. 

Dr. Shorey is an experienced and award-winning educator who believes in life-long learning and a student-centered approach in facilitating evidence-based students’ learning. Dr. Shorey is known among her peers and students as someone who constantly innovates and enhances her teaching pedagogies by incorporating varied educational theories. Dr.Shorey has incorporated virtual reality and artificial intelligence in her teaching and she was awarded the Annual teaching excellence award (highest teaching accolade in NUS) and the Faculty teaching excellence award in 2019. 

Dr. Shorey serves as an editorial board member for renowned international peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Advanced Nursing and she has served as a reviewer for more than 28 peer-reviewed journals. Dr.Shorey represents Singapore for the Southeast and East Asian Nursing Education and Research Network (SEANERN) and the Global Working Group (GWG) on Salutogenesis. Recently Dr. Shorey has co-edited the Fatherhood bulletin with the Australian Fatherhood Network. Dr. Shorey serves as a nominated member of the National Maternal and Child health taskforce Dr. Shorey wishes to be a role model for the younger women scientists by making contributions in achieving the Global sustainable goal of good health and well-being for the new parents, their children, the entire family and the society by large.
